Buku ini ditulis oleh John Kotter (Penulis Peraih Penghargaan dari Harvard Business School) dan beliau adalah guru kepemimpinan dan perubahan di Harvard Business School. Ia adalah penulis sebelas buku yang mendapatkan penghargaan atau menjadi buku bisnis paling laris. Dan Holger Rathgeber beliau adalah seorang manajer global modern. Beliau bekerja untuk Becton Dickinson, salah satu perusahaan teknologi medis dunia.

Our Iceberg Is Melting adalah cerita sederhana tentang cara melakukan sesuatu dengan baik di dunia yang terus berubah. Cerita ini berkisah tentang koloni burung penguin yang hidup di Antartika. Sekelompok penguin kaisar yang indah yang telah bertahun-tahun hidup tenang di sana. Kemudian seekor penguin yang selalu ingin tahu menemukan masalah yang berpotensi menghacurkan kehidupan mereka, sayang tidak ada yang mendengarkannya. Tokoh-tokoh dalam cerita ini, Fred, Alice, louis, Buddy, Profesor dan NoNo, seperti orang-orang yang kita kenal, bahkan seperti diri kita sendiri. Kisah mereka berkisar antara perlawanan terhadap perubahan dan aksi yang gagah berani, penghalang-penghalang yang tampaknya sulit diatasi, dan solusi atau jalan keluar paling cerdik untuk menghadapinya. Cerita semacam ini tampil dalam berbagai bentuk di sekeliling kita, namun mereka mengatasi tantangan tersebut dengan cara yang luar biasa dibandingkan dengan yang mungkin akan kita lakukan. Buku ini didasarkan pada karya terdahulu yang menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan metode Delapan Langkah dapat menghasilkan perubahan yang diperlukan kelompok apapun. Cerita ini dapat dinikmati semua orang dan pada saat bersamaan memberikan petunjuk tak ternilai bagi dunia yang bergerak semakin cepat.

Sinopsis :

Cerita ini mengenai cairnya gunung es di antartika. Dan ada yang mengira gunung es tidak akan mencair. Satu diantara mereka adalah fred yang selalu memikirkan bagaimana nasib keluarga dan teman-temanya apabila gunung es mencair dan mereka semua belum menemukan tempat untuk bernaung. Dan sampai suatu hari fred menunjukkan retakan-retakan dan tanda-tanda penurunan lain akibat adanya pencairan kepada alice. Fred menjelaskan bahwa gunung es tidak sama dengan es balok. Gunung es memiliki celah-celah di dalamnya yang disebut kanal. Kanal dapat mengarah ke gelembung udara besar yang disebut gua. Apabila es mencair dalam jumlah yang cukup, celah-celah yang ada terisi air, yang kemudian akan mengalir ke kanal dan gua.

Singkat cerita fred melakukan eksperimen mengenai gunung es mencair tersebut. Fred mengambil sebuah botol yang berisikan air, menutup lubang diatasnya dan membiarkannya terkena angin dingin. Lantas keesokan harinya bisa dilihat apakah benda ini akan pecah oleh tekanan air yang bertambah karena airnya membeku. Dan yang terjadi keesokan harinya botol itu benar-benar pecah karena es yang mengembang di dalamnya terlalu besar. Eksperimen tersebut sempat di tentang oleh NoNo yang tidak percaya gunung es akan mencair, setelah eksperimen itu selesai dia masih ragu dengan itu tapi tak dapat dipungkiri juga kalau itu akan terjadi. Dan pada akhirnya penguin-penguin tersebut mencari-cari tempat baru untuk kepindahan mereka. dan NoNo masih meramalkan adanya malapetaka sampai saat paling akhir. Dan mereka semua pindah ke tempat baru mereka. Mereka pindah lagi. Ini langkah penting: untuk tidak merasa puas diri dan tidak cepat berhenti.

Maksud dari buku ini adalah, kita harus siap dengan berbagai perubahan di dunia ini dan memastikan bahwa perubahan tidak akan dapat diatasi dengan sikap keras kepala dan tradisi yang sukar dilenyapkan.
